One week ago, voters across the nation cast their ballots and ushered into office more than 300 union members, building more power for working people by adding to the 984 union members elected during last year’s midterm elections. Today, Nov. 12, 2019, is National Run for Office Day. On this day – and all days – OPEIU enthusiastically encourages working people, unionized or not, to build a future worth fighting for by running for office.

As Election Day 2020 inches closer, it’s important that we celebrate working people running for and winning public office – but it’s equally as important, if not more so, to encourage more working people to follow their examples in the coming years. Corporate-backed politicians and billionaire legislators will not protect working families, so it is up to us to create a more just society by ensuring union values – solidarity, mutual assistance, and respect for working people, to name a few – are front-and-center on national, state, and local stages.
