OPEIU Statement: Deal to End Shutdown Leaves Working Families Holding the Bag
For too long, too many federal workers have gone without a paycheck. We are thrilled these public servants are finally able to provide for their families after enduring the longest government shutdown in our nation’s history.
But the “deal” to reopen the government fails to address skyrocketing health care costs caused by the lapsing of Affordable Care Act subsidies. Though Senate Democrats extracted an agreement from Republicans to vote on the continuation of those subsidies next month, we are skeptical the vote will even take place. As we saw, many congressional representatives are uninterested in addressing the health care crisis that continues to whittle down savings accounts, jeopardizing the health and financial security of working people.
While we celebrate a temporary end to the injustice foisted upon federal workers, we are disappointed that millions of working families were abandoned by our elected officials and left scrambling to make ends meet.
Working people are sick and tired of the half-measures, broken promises and political posturing that caused the shutdown and continues to impact our daily lives. Organized labor can and must work to oust all congressional officials who failed to meet this moment and deliver relief for struggling working families.

The U.S. is home to 1.6 million union veterans. In some states, more than a quarter of all working veterans are members of a union. Many are members of the AFL-CIO’s Union Veterans Council, which is committed to advancing the economic well-being of veterans across the country through the power of union membership.
Veterans play an integral role at every level of the labor movement and we are proud to honor them this Veterans Day.
AFL-CIO and OPEIU File Supreme Court Motion in SpaceX v. NLRB to Protect Workers’ Rights and the NLRB’s Authority
(Washington, D.C.)—The AFL-CIO and the Office and Professional Employees (OPEIU) filed a motion to intervene with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking review of a 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision in the SpaceX case. The motion asks the court to allow OPEIU to defend the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB’s) authority and protect workers’ ability to seek justice for labor law violations with the agency.
“The NLRB is one of workers’ primary pathways for justice when their rights are violated. Elon Musk has a long history of union-busting, so it’s no surprise that he is trying to keep the NLRB from holding other employers accountable,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. “This case isn’t only about one workplace or one union—it’s about making sure working people aren’t silenced and that the law still works for all it’s meant to serve. America’s workers are depending on the Supreme Court to stand up for the NLRB and its authority, and against bosses like Elon who want to freeze it into inaction. That’s why the labor movement won’t back down without a fight.”
“In a time when the rights of working people are being stripped away, this case is crucial to OPEIU’s efforts to defend workers. The Supreme Court must continue to allow workers’ rights to be vindicated by the NLRB,” said OPEIU President Tyler Turner.
