Beto for Texas Campaign Staff Ratify First Contract, A Milestone in Texas Politics
HOUSTON, TEXAS (July 26, 2022) — Staffers on the Beto for Texas (BFT) campaign ratified their union contract last month, becoming the first statewide campaign in the Lone Star State to do so.
129 staffers in organizing, canvassing, press, scheduling, data, coordination, events, finance and other roles are all covered under the terms of agreement. Campaigners will join OPEIU Local 277 for the duration of the campaign.
“We are proud to join the labor movement and to be the first Texas statewide campaign to unionize,” said Rocio Dumey, an organizer on the campaign. “Like Beto, we practice what we preach. We want to send a message that every worker in this state should have the right to demand better wages, benefits, and working conditions. We want to join them in that fight.”

Take Advantage of Public Service Loan Forgiveness Changes Before Oct. 31
Many OPEIU members work for “public service employers,” which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
More specifically, under the temporary waiver:
Borrowers who have Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), Perkins loans or other federal student loans can consolidate their loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan and receive PSLF credit for periods of repayment prior to consolidation. Periods of repayment on parent PLUS loans are not eligible under the limited PSLF waiver. Before consolidating, borrowers should check to see if they work for a qualifying employer using the PSLF Help Tool.
Past periods of repayment will now count regardless of whether a borrower made a payment, or made that payment on time, for the full amount due, or on a qualifying repayment plan.
Be sure to check your eligibility for…

OPEIU Strongly Affirms All American’s Fundamental Right to Reproductive Freedom
OPEIU strongly affirms the right of all Americans to make their own health care decisions and have control over their own bodies — including decisions over their personal reproductive health. Today’s Supreme Court decision is a devastating blow to working women and families across the country that will hit hardest low-income women and gender-oppressed people and result in financial insecurity for so many.
This is the latest in a long list of recent attacks on the fundamental rights of working people in this nation. OPEIU reaffirms its commitment to continue fighting for reproductive justice and economic equity for all.
HONORING THE 157TH JUNETEENTH

Arriving on this day in 1865, the Union Army announced the liberation of all enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. The anniversary of this fateful announcement — enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln two-and-a-half years before — has since been celebrated each year as Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is the oldest known Black holiday in U.S. history and, as of last year, the newest federal holiday. It’s a day of reflective celebration honoring the history of Black struggle and progress. In celebrating that rich history today, we too must remember the fight for Black liberation and freedom is an ongoing one.
OPEIU is proud to honor the 157th celebration of Juneteenth. We wish for you and your loved ones a joyful, relaxing and reflective day.
