PANELIST BIOS
Ohio-based Julia Reichert (Director/Producer) is a four-time Academy Award nominee and Oscar winner for her documentary work, which often explores class, gender and race. Julia’s student film Growing Up Female was the first feature documentary of the modern Women's Movement, and was selected for the National Film Registry. Her films Union Maids and Seeing Red: Stories of American Communists, (with Jim Klein) were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Feature Documentary, as was The Last Truck (made with Steven Bognar), as a Short. Her film A Lion in the House (also with Bognar) premiered at Sundance and won the Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking. The couple won the 2020 Academy Award for American Factory美国工厂.
Julia is co-founder of New Day Films, the independent film distribution co-op. She was an advisor on the creation of the IFP and the PBS series P.O.V, and is co-founder of Indie Caucus. She mentored dozens of emerging filmmakers over the years as a Professor of Motion Pictures at Wright State University. Reichert is also the author of Doing It Yourself, the first book on self-distribution in independent film. She is a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Television Academy. In 2018, the International Documentary Association (IDA) gave Julia their Career Achievement Award. In 2019, the Museum of Modern Art and the Wexner Center for the Arts teamed up to present a traveling retrospective of Julia’s films. She is also a proud mom and grandma.
Kim Cook is an extension associate at the Cornell Worker Institute. She is the past president of SEIU Local 925, a local of child care and public sector workers in Washington State. She served on the SEIU International Executive Board and as international vice president. She will moderate the discussion.
Rosalinda Aguirre is an activist and organizer, former volunteer/staff for UFW in California, and active member of national District 925, where she is an elected member of its executive board. She works with union members at SEIU and the American Federation of Teachers, as well as faith-based organizations. Currently works as support staff and an OPEIU Local 8 member at International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 751.
Joan Weiss was hired in 1982 to work at the University of Washington where she became a union steward, bargaining team member and officer. In 1991, she was hired by the union as an organizer representative and much of her work involved internal organizing. From 2001 to 2017, Joan worked as the labor liaison for the King County Community and Technical Colleges at the Worker Center, AFL-CIO. She was a steward and trustee of OPEIU Local 8. Joan retired in 2017 and continues to serve as an OPEIU Local 8 trustee.
Maren Stoddard Mack has been at Augsburg University, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for five years in the Center for Global Education and Experience. Augsburg University staff won their union in January 2021 with OPEIU Local 12, and she is part of the bargaining team for the inaugural contract.
Deanna Davis has worked at Augsburg University in Minneapolis for nearly three years. Being involved in the Augsburg Staff Union campaign has been an enlightening education, she says, and she hopes to continue her involvement in the coming years. Deanna gave birth to a sweet little boy in September 2020 named Aaron.
