This Labor Day, we celebrate a historic year for working people and their unions.
Public approval of unions is at a level not seen since 1965, with 71 percent of Americans expressing support for unions, according to a recent Gallup poll. Majorities in every age bracket -- from Gen Z to Baby Boomers -- say they'd join a union.
As a movement, we are faced with unprecedented challenges and opportunities.
Union elections are taking place at a record pace, but a worker-friendly National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) remains strategically underfunded by anti-union activists in Congress.
Workers at major corporations like Starbucks and Amazon are fighting back against their employers' illegal union-busting tactics -- and winning recognition of their unions.
Ostensibly progressive nonprofits, too, have mirrored the corporate union-busting playbook, but nonprofit workers are winning historic union campaigns at major organizations like the Guttmacher Institute and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. These, and many others, are now proud to call themselves OPEIU members!
We look forward to building upon the momentum we've built together inside our union and as part of the broader global movement for economic, racial and social justice at work and in our communities.
Happy Labor Day.
In solidarity,
Team OPEIU
