Newest OPEIU Member Benefit: OPEIU Free College Benefit

OPEIU is pleased to introduce the newest union benefit for all OPEIU members – the OPEIU Free College Benefit. Just as the name implies, OPEIU members and their families can now earn an associate degree completely free of charge.

With all the expenses working families have to deal with these days, it’s good to know that meeting the costs of rising tuition and textbooks doesn’t have to be one of them. If you have children graduating from high school and planning to attend college or you are looking for a way to advance your own career, the OPEIU Free College Benefit is here to help. Beginning this summer, every member or retired member, as well as spouses, children, grandchildren and dependents of OPEIU members, can earn a two-year degree online for free. You read that right – free college just for being an OPEIU member in good standing.

Local 30 Scholarship and New Student Debt Relief Program – Apply Today!

Dear Local 30 Member,

I am very pleased to announce the new Student Debt Relief Program as part of the Local 30 Scholarship Fund. Once again, the members of our Scholarship Committee have worked very hard to bring our members this wonderful benefit. If you, or a member of your immediate family is currently attending College, or will be this fall or have loans from a recognized student loan provider or debtor organization, and are current in their student loan payments, then this Union benefit is just in time.

Local 30’s ‘Shoes for Kids’ Shoe Drive

There’s an old saying, ‘No matter how tough you think you have it, there’s always someone worse off.’ We recently learned of just such a case, and we want to help.

Perkins Elementary School in Barrio Logan in San Diego is a public school with students from K-8th grade. At first glance this school looks like many others with children at play, learning, and carrying on as kids do. But this school has a very difficult challenge that makes the student’s success very difficult; Homelessness.

PSP Payouts for 2016

It is that time again when we receive the payouts from the Performance Sharing Program (PSP) in accordance with the National Agreement.  All union members in the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions will receive a payout for 2016.

Don’t Sign It! Fair Pay For Hard Work!

Don’t Sign It! Fair Pay For Hard Work!

Today, the San Diego City Council overrode Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s veto and OFFICIALLY PASSED THE EARNED SICK DAYS AND MINIMUM WAGE ORDINANCE! Their override means that the Earned Sick Leave-Minimum Wage is once again in place to help hardworking San Diegans who struggle to pay the rent and buy groceries.

However, our fight continues, opponents representing a small handful of special interests have announced that they are prepared to spend what it takes to repeal the law. They will be in front of grocery stores and other areas in the city attempting to collect 34,000 signatures to repeal the law.

To push back against this brazen attack against hard working San Diegans we need your help! Council President Todd Gloria, Irwin Jacobs, Mel Katz, Bill Walton and Barbara Bry kicked off the citywide campaign, simply called “Don’t Sign It,” to defeat the referendum against the ordinance.

Today, City Council stood up for 280,000 San Diegans who lack sick leave and nearly 200,000 low-wage workers who work hard every day and can’t afford rent and groceries, now its time to do our part.

Here's what you can do
:

  1. Take the pledge not to sign the anti-sick days anti-minimum wage petitions.
  2. Inform as many people as possible that the earned sick days and minimum wage policy HAS PASSED, and that any signature gathering effort is an attempt to TAKE IT AWAY!! Tell your friends: DON’T SIGN IT!
  3. If you see a signature gatherer, call or text the following hotline: (619) 930 – 3300.
  4. Volunteer.

Click here to take the pledge to protect the Earned Sick Leave-Minimum Wage Ordinance.

Also, please download this “Don’t Sign It” image (right click + save image). Please post it on social media and print it out and hang it for all to see.
