OPEIU Strongly Affirms All American's Fundamental Right to Reproductive Freedom

  • 24 June 2022
OPEIU strongly affirms the right of all Americans to make their own health care decisions and have control over their own bodies -- including decisions over their personal reproductive health. Today's Supreme Court decision is a devastating blow to working women and families across the country that will hit hardest low-income women and gender-oppressed people and result in financial insecurity for so many.

This is the latest in a long list of recent attacks on the fundamental rights of working people in this nation. OPEIU reaffirms its commitment to continue fighting for reproductive justice and economic equity for all.

HONORING THE 157TH JUNETEENTH

  • 19 June 2022

Arriving on this day in 1865, the Union Army announced the liberation of all enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. The anniversary of this fateful announcement — enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln two-and-a-half years before — has since been celebrated each year as Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is the oldest known Black holiday in U.S. history and, as of last year, the newest federal holiday. It’s a day of reflective celebration honoring the history of Black struggle and progress. In celebrating that rich history today, we too must remember the fight for Black liberation and freedom is an ongoing one.

OPEIU is proud to honor the 157th celebration of Juneteenth. We wish for you and your loved ones a joyful, relaxing and reflective day.

Kickstarter United Wins Historic First Contract

  • 17 June 2022

Major collective bargaining gains include guaranteed wage increases, no intrusive monitoring, and limits on the use of contracted and temporary employees.

NEW YORK, N.Y. (June 17, 2022) — Members of Kickstarter United (KSRU), the first union in the U.S. to win wall-to-wall recognition at a tech company, voted overwhelmingly this week to ratify their first collective bargaining agreement with their employer.

The ratification vote, passed with 97.6 percent support, concludes KSRU’s historic campaign for a first contract with the crowdfunding company, which began when workers at the company went public with their intent to unionize in January 2020 with OPEIU Local 153.

"When I made the career change to enter tech, I never would have expected the opportunity to be a part of something like Kickstarter United,” said Liishi Durbin, a software engineer at Kickstarter. “For me, the contract is a reminder that fair labor practices are vital across all industries—not everyone in tech is an engineer, and not every engineer is paid equally.”
